A garage door opener is a motor, a drive (chain, belt, screw or wall-mounted jackshaft), a logic board and a set of safety sensors working together. When the door won't respond, reverses for no reason or strains to move, the cause can be anywhere from misaligned photo-eyes to a stripped drive gear — or a door problem the opener is struggling against.
We check the door's balance first, because a heavy, unbalanced door is the most common reason openers fail early. Then we repair the opener or, if it's at the end of its life, help you choose a quieter, safer replacement with features like battery backup and smartphone control.

Garage Door Opener Repair & Installation: common questions
Why does my garage door opener hum but not open?
Common causes are a stripped drive gear, a failed start capacitor, a broken spring making the door too heavy, or the door being locked. Pull the emergency release and test the door by hand — if it's heavy, the problem is the springs, not the opener.
Why does my garage door go back up when closing?
Usually the safety photo-eyes near the floor are dirty, blocked or knocked out of alignment. Clean the lenses and make sure both indicator lights are solid. If it keeps happening, the close-force setting or a track obstruction may be the cause.
Is it worth repairing an old opener?
If it's under about 10–15 years old and the fix is a common part, repair often makes sense. Older units without modern safety sensors, or ones that need a motor or logic board, are usually better replaced.
Which type of opener is quietest?
Belt-drive and wall-mount (jackshaft) openers are typically the quietest — a good choice when there's a bedroom above or beside the garage.
